Dr. Mikkelsen is a native of the Inland Northwest in Washington. He was raised in Western Montana and attended Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, before graduating from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
He finished a urologic surgical residency and a surgical internship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before joining the qualified providers of Spokane Urology in 1990.
Dr. Mikkelsen holds admitting privileges at Deaconess Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center, and Valley Hospital.
Passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills, Dr. Mikkelsen has instructed residents with the Family Medicine Spokane Residency Program affiliated with the University of Washington Department of Family Medicine in Seattle, Washington. His teaching activities have included both in-office instruction and didactic lectures.
Dr. Mikkelson offers the whole spectrum of urologic care, including the treatment of stone disease and incontinence surgery. He’s also developed a special interest in surgery for urologic cancers.
He helped develop an early and successful program for robotic-assisted urologic surgery utilizing the da Vinci® robotic system at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He continues to offer both open and laparoscopic approaches for a wide range of urologic malignancies.
Being outdoors is just one of Dr. Mikkelson’s hobbies away from the medical office. He also spends much of his valuable time with his wife and two daughters.
